Hamiltonian dynamics for complex food webs.

چکیده
We investigate stability and dynamics of large ecological networks by introducing classical methods of dynamical system theory from physics, including Hamiltonian and averaging methods. Our analysis exploits the topological structure of the network, namely the existence of strongly connected nodes (hubs) in the networks. We reveal new relations between topology, interaction structure, and network dynamics. We describe mechanisms of catastrophic phenomena leading to sharp changes of dynamics and hence completely altering the ecosystem. We also show how these phenomena depend on the structure of interaction between species. We can conclude that a Hamiltonian structure of biological interactions leads to stability and large biodiversity.

Population Dynamics on Complex Food Webs
In this work we analyze the topological and dynamical properties of a simple model of complex food webs, namely the niche model. We describe the system as an oriented weighted graph and we assign a Lotka-Volterra population dynamics on the structure created by the niche model. After this we introduce “predators” and “prey” weighted graphs from which we underline patterns of competition among sp...
متن کاملPersistence Increases with Diversity and Connectance in Trophic Metacommunities
BACKGROUND We are interested in understanding if metacommunity dynamics contribute to the persistence of complex spatial food webs subject to colonization-extinction dynamics. We study persistence as a measure of stability of communities within discrete patches, and ask how do species diversity, connectance, and topology influence it in spatially structured food webs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FI...
متن کاملFood-web complexity, meta-community complexity and community stability
What allows interacting, diverse species to coexist in nature has been a central question in ecology, ever since the theoretical prediction that a complex community should be inherently unstable. Although the role of spatiality in species coexistence has been recognized, its application to more complex systems has been less explored. Here, using a meta-community model of food web, we show that ...
متن کاملEvolution of Complex Food Web Structure Based on Mass Extinction
We demonstrate that complex food webs may originate from mass extinctions. For this purpose, a minimal computational model for the evolution of food webs is constructed. In the model, food web structure is represented by a kind of dynamic random graph with some biological constraints, and evolves under the condition without fitness, competition among species, nor population dynamics. It is show...
متن کاملLocal dynamical equivalence of certain food webs
An important challenge in theoretical ecology is to find good-coarse grained representations of complex food webs. Here we use the approach of generalized modeling to show that it may be possible to formulate a coarse-graining algorithm that conserves the local dynamics of the model exactly. We show examples of food webs with a different number of species that have exactly identical local bifur...
